Saturday, January 12,
2008~ “Special Patients,” featuring Harvey Levy DMD, MAGD.
Hygienists and general dentists are very skilled and comfortable performing procedures on cooperative patients in their offices. When patients are uncooperative or combative, hygienists and dentists cannot perform their best work, or may be unable to complete the task. Referrals are difficult for patients with special needs. This includes those who are very anxious, mentally challenged, medically compromised, autistic, combative, very young, or have Alzheimers. Practitioners might wish to consider performing these procedures while the patient is sedated in the office or asleep in a hospital or surgical center operating room. For some patients, home-bound, institution or nursing home dentistry, however limited, is the only care they can receive.
In this session we will discuss tips and tricks for treating patients under sedation in an office. We will review techniques for treating patients in alternative settings outside the traditional office. We will also share with you the protocols and procedures for general dentistry via general anesthesia, drawn from 1,000 successful operations on patients not otherwise treatable in a dental office.
**Howard County Legislators are invited to attend. Meet the people who represent you!

Wednesday,
March 12, 2008-
“Infection Control Update,” featuring Melissa Mulreany, D.D.S.
Dr. Mulreany is dedicated to developing new programs and helping health professionals navigate the challenging seas of OSHA/MOSH laws, as well as educating dental professionals on today's infectious disease issues.
This program reviews the 2007 CDC recommendations for infection control in dentistry. It describes how they are used by State Boards nationwide as an evaluation tool when responding to a complaint filed against a dental health care worker. Each CDC protocol presented includes a step-by-step description for its application in a dental setting. Adaptation of the guidelines may prevent the many pitfalls that commonly occur, potentially resulting in a disciplinary action. Practical solutions are provided to enhance both clinical and administrative practice management strategies, thereby ensuring that your office is in compliance with all CDC infection control recommendations.
This meeting is open to all Howard County Dental Association members and office staff.
